CPI to protest Lanka violence
The Communist Party of India (CPI) says it is planning a day of action against Sri Lanka government's alleged human rights violations. D Pandian, General Secretary of CPI Tamilnadu branch, told BBC Tamil Service that the action is aimed at urging Indian government to exert pressure on Sri Lanka to come up with a political solution to the national question. "Sri Lanka government is only indulging in genocide against its own citizens," he said. He also accused the Sri Lanka government of "lying" on the plight of the civilians caught in the conflict. The Communist Party is of the opinion that the current Sri Lanka government 'is not a civilian government'. Sri Lanka has legitimate right to fight terrorism and all sort of other illegal activities, he said, but there are accepted international standards to adhere with. He also added that it is the responsibility of the powerful party, the government to come with a solution to the conflict not the LTTE. The CPI that supported the coalition government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently withdrew their support protesting the nuclear deal with the United States. The CPI is minor political party in the Indian parliament. | LOCAL LINKS JVP opposes Tamil registration21 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya 'Indian staff injured' in LTTE attack11 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya Indians injured in LTTE raid09 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya India, Sri Lanka 'war' over war12 August, 2008 | Sandeshaya 'Serious security lapse' for SAARC06 August, 2008 | Sandeshaya
