Two partners in Mahinda Rajapaksa administration have accused each other over killings and abductions in the eastern Sri Lankan district of Batticaloa. Media spokesman for Ealam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), Nelson Edirisinghe, accused police of not taking actions to save their cadres being abducted by a rival party. The decomposed body of EPDP member Kalimuttu Gunaseelan, 29, was found by Valachchenai police on Friday. Mr. Edirisinghe accused police of being ignorant to their pleas to save his life despite a complaint lodged over his abduction by Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) on 19 June. 'Abducted' on 19 June Eastern Province Chief Minister, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan (Pillayan) is the current leader of the TMVP, also known as the Karuna faction.
Both the TMVP and EPDP, political allies of President Rajapaksa, are accused by international watchdogs of gross human rights violations. The TMVP, a breakaway faction of the Tamil Tiger rebels, is accused of killings, child recruitment and widespread election malpractices in the recent polls for the eastern Provincial Council (EPC). Paramilitary groups turned political parties, the EPDP and the TMVP, have publicly admitted abductions, a punishable offence in Sri Lanka. Impunity for violators However human rights watchdogs have accused the Sri Lankan authorities of failing to bring the culprits to the books.
Four EPDP members were arrested by the police earlier this week over an alleged abduction of a TMVP member. Mr. Edirisinghe accused a TMVP group led by local leader Ajith of abducting Mr. Gunaseelan, a father of one child. He was brutally tortured by the abductors before killing him, the EPDP spokesman added. The EPDP accused the government of not taking action to control the situation in the east.
