Govt. 'trying to rob' east elections
Rauff Hakeem
Hakeem says SLMC to contest the polls though Govt. would try to rig it
Muslim leaders in Sri Lanka have accused the government of trying to rob Tamil votes in the eastern province.

The Sri Lankan government has decided to hold the local body polls in the eastern province.

Leader, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Rauff Hakeem told BBC Sandeshaya that the government is trying to win the elections at any cost.

However, the SLMC would contest the elections, the former Telecom Minister in Rajapaksa administration said.

Last polls in 1994

Minister for Local Government Janaka Bandara Tennakoon told BBC Sandeshaya that nominations have been called for nine local government bodies including the Batticaloa municipal council.

Elections in these areas could not be held earlier "due to the volatile situation,"said the minister.

The last local government elections in the east were held in 1994.

The elections commissioner will accept nominations between the 14 and 19 of January.

Minister Tennakoon said that the situation in the east has improved making it possible to hold elections "possibly in February".

Karuna faction

Minister Tennakoon also added that the government intends reinstating refugees in the area before February elections.

Speaking about Karuna and Pillayan fractions minister Tennakoon insisted that the government will not let any armed groups terrorise the area during elections.

He also added the elections will not take place if the government is not able to contain the situation.

Minister Tennakoon says the government has not yet decided whether to stand for elections with a coalition.

He also added if armed groups are willing to take the democratic path they are welcome to take part in the February elections.
