The Sri Lanka defence authorities have decided to reopen the road to sacred Madhu Mary's Church in Mannar. A spokesman for Media Centre for National Security told BBC Sandeshaya that ICRC was informed of the decision by the Ministry of Defence to reopen the road from Sunday night. The Medawachchi- Mannar road will be open until 17 August to allow devotees to attend the annual Madhu festival. However, the spokesman added that the road still remained closed on Monday night. The Tamil Tigers have informed Mannar Bishop Rayappu Joseph of their decision to open the road from 10-17 August. In an interview with BBC Tamil Service, Bishop Joseph expressed hope that all devotees irrespective of race will be able to attend the festival. He requested those wishing to travel by their own vehicles to bring the original national identity card along with four photo copies. | LOCAL LINKS Fierce fighting in Madhu area14 July, 2007 | Sandeshaya 'No War Zone' declared28 June, 2007 | Sandeshaya Respect HR, restart talks - Pope20 April, 2007 | Sandeshaya 'Forced conscription' by LTTE21 March, 2007 | Sandeshaya | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
