Fierce fighting in Madhu area

The Sri Lankan army says its troops have clashed with separatist Tamil Tigers in northern district of Vavuniya, leaving ten soldiers dead and at least thirty others wounded.

The military spokesman, Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said the fighting started when soldiers attacked a rebel mortar position from where they were firing at government troops.

He said the LTTE making use of the no war zone declared for the Madhu festival were continuously firing at secuirty forces who were compelled to retaliate.

The Tamil Tigers say at least three of their soldiers were killed.

32 soldiers in hospital

Anuradhapura Lankadeepa correspondent, Athula Bandara told BBC Sinhala Service that thirty two injured soldiers had been admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital.

The Sri Lankan air force says it also attacked a rebel camp in the northern district of Mannar.
