'Resistance' protest corruption, COL
A cross section of trade unionists, left wing political parties, civil society organisations and religious leaders have joint together to protest disappearances, increasing cost of living (COL) and corruption in Sri Lanka. The 'Resistance' (Prathiroadhaya) movement accused President Mahinda Rajapaksa of leading Sri Lanka to extreme poverty. "Fishing has collapsed, no industries working, Sri Lankan people are increasingly becoming beggars as a result of war," Convenor of Resistance, Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne said. "Mahinda's state is becoming a state of refugees," he told the protesters gathered in front of Colombo Fort station. Srinath Perera of United Socialist Party (USP) said the COL is skyrocketing while the terror prevails in the island nation. "People are only complaining than protesting this situation. We need to make it to a wide people's movement," Perera added. The protesters questioned the right of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna's (JVP) right to protest COL. "JVP is part of this government. They have no moral right to protest against it while being part of it," Joseph Stalin, Secretary, Lanka Teachers' Association said. | LOCAL LINKS UN condemns SLRC workers' killing05 June, 2007 | Sandeshaya SLRC workers 'executed'04 June, 2007 | Sandeshaya Red cross workers killed in Colombo03 June, 2007 | Sandeshaya
