HRW calls for UN Rights mission
International human rights watchdogs have called for a special United Nations mechanism to monitor rights abuses in Sri Lanka. In a letter sent to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, New York based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called for the creation of a UN monitoring mission for Sri Lanka. The mission should be empowered to deter, monitor and help investigate abuses by both government forces and the Tamil Tigers, HRW said. "Both the government and the LTTE have long been responsible for serious abuses, and the violations will not end without concerted international effort," Asia director of HRW, Brad Adams said. A statement issued by the watchdog has expressed concern on escalating abductions, killings, and enforced disappearances implicating pro-government forces. "Particularly troubling is a government crackdown on the media, humanitarian agencies, and nongovernmental organisations based on unsubstantiated claims they are supporting the LTTE," the statement added. The HRW, has accused Tamil Tigers of seriously violating the rights of Tamils under their control. "The LTTE continues to engage in killings and the use of child soldiers," the statement said. | LOCAL LINKS 'Karuna's men in IDP camps' - Amnesty13 March, 2007 | Sandeshaya Protest in TN against SL Navy12 March, 2007 | Sandeshaya President criticises police chiefs11 March, 2007 | Sandeshaya Aid workers' death "a murder"09 March, 2007 | Sandeshaya Govt. defends human rights record07 March, 2007 | Sandeshaya Visiting terror suspects 'disallowed ' 07 March, 2007 | Sandeshaya
