Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in eastern Sri Lanka have rejected government proposals to resettle them away from their original homes. The refugees say they would not go back if the government imposes 50m ban from the main roads in resettling them. In a meeting chaired by Eastern Province Governor in Trincomalee, security officials have suggested government impose 500m ban from the coastal areas. IDPs were also suggested to be resettled 50m ban from main roads. "My house is very close to the main road. We will not get any other land like this as the land in the area is very expensive," a refugee told journalist Shanthi Sellvadorai. They categorically rejected to stay longer in refugee camps or swap their lands for other areas away from the road. Some accused government of trying to take evict them in order to capture their lands for mega development projects. "We cannot continue fishing if we will be pushed away from the coastal area," a fisherman said. | LOCAL LINKS 500m rule for Trinco IDPs25 February, 2007 | Sandeshaya Lanka military claims successes25 February, 2007 | Sandeshaya | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
