Voting in Colombo
Counting of local polls in 20 local councils have now begun.

Though there were 1,071,551 voters eligible to vote , the turn out was low, correspondents say.

Polls were held to elect 312 local council members to 20 local bodies including the Colombo Municipal Council, Gampaha MC, Galle MC and Kalmunai MC.

The authorities in Sri Lanka have postponed elections into two local bodies in the north due to security concerns.

Polls for two bodies in Vavuniya postponed due to security reasons

The Elections Commissioner on Friday announced that the elections for Vavuniya Urban Council and Vavuniya South (Sinhala) Pradesheeya Sabha will be held 30 September.

Ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) recorded a landslide victory in the first round of elections held on 30 March.

The main opposition, United National Party (UNP), won 33 bodies and President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s political ally, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), managed to hold only onto Tissmaharama Pradesheeya Sabha.
