Two soldiers and LTTE cadre killed
The army in Sri Lanka say an officer and another soldier have been killed in an attack on one of their bases by Tamil Tiger rebels. The army said the attack took place near the northern town of Vavuniya, close to rebel-held territory. The army said their troops had returned fire. The clash took place amid growing speculation that the European Union is about to ban the Tamil Tigers as a terrorist outfit. The United States, where Tigers are proscribed, earlier this week urged the EU to ban Tamil Tigers following an upsurge in violence between the rebels and government forces in the recent weeks. Meanwhile, a Tamil Tigers said one of their cadres was sot dead at his home on Thursday night at Mankerny in Batticaloa District. | LOCAL LINKS AI: Probe civilian killings17 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya Jaffna VC 'threatened by Tigers'17 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya US concerns on LTTE16 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya Escalating violence threatens the safety16 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya SLMM: Sri Lanka 'at war'14 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya Navy denies shooting Jaffna Civilians14 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya US and EU condemn attack13 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya
