SLMM: Sri Lanka 'at war'
SLMM chief Ulf Henricsson
SLMM says There is a 'low-intensity' war in Sri Lanka
International truce monitors in Sri Lanka have said that the country is locked in low-intensity war despite a ceasefire.

Head of Sri Lanka monitoring mission (SLMM), Ulf Henricsson, has described the situation in Sri Lanka as a 'low-intensity war'.

His comments come after Thursday's attack by the Tamil Tiger rebels against the Sri Lankan navy.

It was the worst incident at sea since the truce was signed four years ago.

The fact there were truce monitors aboard the naval vessel, making it worse.

Analysts say that the Cease fire Agreement (CFA) signed in February 2002 is intact only on paper.

There are almost daily violations of the truce by both sides.

BBC’s Dumeetha Luthra in Colombo says the situation is looking very bleak.

The attack on Thursday has been condemned by the European Union and the US as a gross violation of the ceasefire.

A growing number clashes between the military and the rebels is pushing the country into conflict.

The European Union said that only the ceasefire stood between the country and an outright war which neither side could win.
