Tamil Tigers ‘tried to kill MP’
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva
JVP says LTTE tried to kill their Trincomalee district MP
Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tigers attempted to assassinate a Sinhala parliamentarian, opposition Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said.

However, the party would not be intimidated by LTTE threats, JVP’s General Secretary Tilvin Silva said.

In a press conference held in Colombo on Monday, the JVP said the LTTE’s attempt to evict the JVP from the east would not be successful.

Kantale attack

The first attack on JVP by the Tamil Tigers, Tilvin Silva said, would not in any way prevent JVP’s democratic political activity in the region.

A hand grenade was thrown at JVP’s political office in Kantale on Sunday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jayantha Jayasinghe told the BBC that LTTE members, who arrived in a motorcycle, have attacked the office in Trincomalee district.

Nobody was injured though Trincomalee district JVP parliamentarian Jayantha Wijesekara and two others were in the office at the time of the attack.

Protest

Attackers have fled the scene after the bomb attack and shooting a police officer.

Police and security forces have arrested a wounded LTTE member and two others after the attack.

The police officer was admitted to Kurunegala hospital while the wounded LTTE member was admitted to a hospital in Kandy, police said.

There was no word from the LTTE on the incident.

Meanwhile, many shops and schools were closed in Kantale as nearly fifteen hundred people on Monday marched in the town protesting the attack.
