JVP promied to take the country 'forward' in 2004 manifesto
Trincomalee district Member of Parliament (MP) Jayantha Wijesekara has been arrested by the police on Friday.

Wijesekara, a leading member of Sri Lankan government’s coalition partner Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), was released on bail by the Kantale magistrate after holding him in custody for two hours within the court premises.

MP Wijesekara is accused of threatening a senior health official in a row over how to control Dengue fever in the area.

A warrant was issued to arrest Wijesekara by Kantale magistrate Ranga Dissanayake as he failed to appear on court on charges of threatening former Chief Medical Officer ( Kantale) Rohitha Silva.

Wijesekara is the first JVP MP to be arrested on a warrant since the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA) came to power in April 2004.
