Judges named to probe killings

Sri Lanka’s president on Monday named two high Court judges to serve in the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on alleged attacks on LTTE cadres in the East.

Vavuniya High Court judge Mr. J. Visvanathan will chair the Commission and Judge of the Ampara High Court Mr. W. T. M. P. B. Warawewa is the other member of the Commission, a statement from the presidential secretariat said.

“The Commission will record evidence from Civilians, Armed Forces, Police and the LTTE to ascertain the circumstances and/or the motive leading to the attacks on those alleged to be LTTE Cadres.”

President Chandrika Kumaratunga announced the appointment on 03 March in the wake of a attack on LTTE’s senior political leader in Batticaloa district.

Kuveni and two other female cadres were shot in Ampara

Batticaloa-Amapra district political wing leader (women) Kuveni and two other LTTE women cadres were taken to Thirukkovil hospital on 28 February after the shooting at Thambiliwil.

The three women were travelling to Thirukkovil in Ampara from Kokkadicholai in a three wheel taxi when they were shot at by an armed man came in a motorcycle, police said.

In February, Tamil tigers’ Batticaloa-Ampara political wing leader E Kausalyan was shot dead in the government controlled area.

The rebels blamed the government for carrying out the killing.

The government denied the accusation and said it was carried out by a rival rebel faction.

Hearings

The Commission will only hear the evidence on circumstances relating to the incidents of killing, causing injury and attempts to kill or injure by use of firearms or explosives mainly in the Batticaloa and Ampara Districts during 01 February to 02 March 2005, presidential secretariat said.

According to the statement, inquiries will be held in the Ampara Courts Complex from 28 March to 01 April 2005 and in the Batticaloa Courts Complex from 04 April to 08 April 2005.
