Sri Lanka’s judiciary sentenced Parliamentary and Christian Affairs minister’s wife and four others to death on Wednesday. Colombo high court ruled that the wife of Minister Milroy Fernando and three others were guilty of abducting and murdering two women in Vennappuwa. Mary Juliet Fernando Monica, Ajith Priyankara Perera, Neville Rohana Peiris and Sugath Krishantha were found guilty of murdering them during 1991 and 1994. Six of the seven member jury decided the accused were guilty of murdering Chalet Theresa Fernando and Teclin Seelawathie while the other jury member voted against. This is the first death penalty issued after Sri Lankan government decided to implement the capital punishment in the wake of murder of senior high court judge Sarath Ambepitiya in November 2004.
