"At this moment Sampur is completely under the control of the our forces,"says regional Army commander Sarath Wijethunge.

"LTTE has stopped striking us".

On our way it was clear that the Sri Lanka forces were in full control over destroyed LTTE camps in Kattaparichchan.

Kattaparichchan was the final bunker that the security forces had to conquer before securing Sampur.

The military launched an operation to capture the strategically important LTTE camp, in late August.

Around 750 Tamil rebels have stricken from north, west and east of Kattaparichchan to the Sri Lanka army bunkers and got hold of eight bunkers by the late afternoon of the 1st of September.

By the 2nd of September the forces fought back and managed to take control the whole area.

Deserted town

Sampur is now a completely deserted town.

It is full of ruins of old buildings and damaged houses. There is no one left in this area apart from the army soldiers.

I saw Bicycles on the roads that were left behind by the Tamil rebels while running away from the advancing security forces.

Electricity cables in the area have been destroyed during the battle.

"Sampur was like the heart of LTTE, our forces have not been to Sampur for at least a decade," comments Commanding officer Padmasiri Talwatta.

Soldiers say they fought LTTE face to face during the battle.

Photographs of the fallen Sea Tigers were scattered all over the floor, in one of the abandoned Sea Tiger camps.

Journalists witnessed that the security forces have now fully secured Sampur.
