Sampoor battle 'not all out war'
Rambukwella taking office as a new minister
Govt. says committed to peace despite capturing a key LTTE camp
The government of Sri Lanka says the battle for control over a Tamil Tiger stronghold in the east did not mean resumption of all out war.

Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told journalists in Colombo that the security forces engaged in a defensive operation against the LTTE in Sampoor to protect Trincomalee harbour and other economic centres.

“President Rajapaksa informed the co-chairs of the need to gain control over Sampoor to prevent further LTTE attacks on Trincomalee,” he said.

'Protect sovereignty'

The battle for control over Maavilaru sluice gate and continuous attacks on strategically important centres in Trincomalee forced the government to take decisive action, Rambukwella said.

“It is our duty to protect the sovereignty of Sri Lanka”.

However, the minister stressed that the government is committed to find a peaceful solution to the national question despite capturing a key part of LTTE-held territory.

The military affairs spokesman expressed satisfaction that the LTTE has also expressed its commitment to the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA).

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday announced capturing of the key town as he addressed the 55th annual conference of the ruling party.

"Our troops have captured Sampur," he told Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) delegates to thunderous applause.

The LTTE also admitted defeat in the battle.

“Sri Lankan forces are now in control of Sampoor,” Tamil Tiger military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan told the BBC Sandeshaya.
