V opened up with new-to-the-scene-band Rooster. I had mixed feeling about this band when I first heard them. the first thing I thought was another boy rocker band like Busted. However when they were on stage they clearly had more depth and power to their music and also demonstrated a unique style... not another copy. OK I admit it, they impressed me and I could see why they were chosen to open the 10th V. What was the deal with the guitarist’s shirt though? | "Robert Plant was the star of the whole festival. Yes he was on a small stage, yes he wasn’t headlining but he was still the best." | | Josh Withey |
Idlewild were next on my band list, partly because Kirsty couldn’t stop singing their praises. So I thought I would check them out. Standing down in the pit I noticed first how skilled they were at playing a live gig - I reckon the most important quality in a band (some are only any good on a recording). Idlewild struck me as a cracking band and prompted me to go buy some albums - a real must-hear for all you readers! | | Joss Stone |
Joss Stone was amazing! That’s all I need to say on the matter. She played the audience brilliantly, getting sing-a-longs all the time and she even took the time to pose for my camera. She is a brilliant singer and performer and deserves everything that she has strived to achieve. Well-done Joss. Athlete a personal fave of mine have been criticised of being very samey and boring. Agreed they are not as animated on stage as many of the other acts, but in all fairness there is talent and this is reflected in the music. They played many of their old classics and some off the new album Tourist. | | Franz Ferdinand |
A welcome return for Franz Ferdinand to the music community, after being very quiet for the past months. Making the best entrance of the festival to the Doctor Who theme on bounded Franz Ferdinand playing my favourite of their songs Michael. Their new stuff also sounds a gem as well so I will be getting that! The Scissor Sisters as always were tremendous. Their on stage performance was dazzling as giant silver discs covered in lights spelt out the bands name. Wearing their trademark fashion they exploded onto the stage amidst a sea of colour a truly awesome thing to watch. Their performance of songs was brilliant getting the right mix of old and new songs to please the crowd. I also enjoyed meeting Anna Matronic and Jake Shears after the set. Wakey wakey As Sunday dawned, a bright and warm sun came up. I finally managed to free myself from my tent after trapping myself in it the previous night (dam zip came off) and went in search of some great bands. And so I came across the Magic Numbers, a critically acclaimed band that I'd never seen live before. They were ace! The crowd loved them and they loved the crowd. They stopped halfway through a few songs and sure enough they were blasted back by the crowd finishing the lyrics for them. A truly great gig. Jet what can I say about Jet. Well we missed them at V 2004 which was a shame but they were back this year on the V Stage and looking rock and roll baby yeah! With their big black glasses and beautiful backdrop Jet pounded out song after song to a baying audience. | | Crowd |
The Zutons were I think placed too early on in the day. They jumped about on stage playing a great set but the audience were not in the mood to dance no matter how much they were encouraged by the band. A shame really as they were trying their hardest to get people in their mood. When I looked at the running order, Morning Runner instantly jumped out at me. The last time I saw them they were playing to a crowd of 15 in Wolverhampton. So I thought it would be nice to catch them again and see how they had changed. The simple answer is they hadn’t, they were just as at home playing a huge festival audience as a tiny gig. Well done guys I really liked the set and keep it up your gonna be big! Now the Kaiser Chiefs are a fantastic band live. However when I heard that frontman Ricky Wilson had broken his ankle I worried that the show would be little more than him hobbling around - I Predict a Riot wouldn't seem quite right performed on crutches! However he lived up to his reputation and as well as jumping like a madman he ran around the monitors, all on a broken ankle... pretty good eh? Watching the Kaiser Chiefs seems a bit like watching Madness strut their stuff! Oasis were in a word disappointing. They didn't seem to suit this live festival at all - they were all very rigid and just recited their songs off like a list. There was no character or charisma. A real disappointment. Plus what annoyed me the most was the fact most people came for the old songs like Don’t Look Back in Anger, but they played many of the new, less ground-breaking ones. | | Robert Plant |
Robert Plant was the star of the whole festival. Yes he was on a small stage, yes he wasn’t headlining but he was still the best. He had so much energy and talent it just spilled over the stage and infected everyone. The crowd just got more and more excited, singing louder and jumping higher from this one man + band than Oasis ever could achieve. He moved, jumped and threw the microphone like he was back in the old days and he left an impression of greatness on everyone that watched him, and that’s why he was the best act I saw at V. So all that’s left to say is V will be back! (he he he insert evil laugh here) Josh Withey |
