Idlewild

Catch up with Idlewild

By Kirsty Hannah
This year's V Festival had just kicked off and whilst everyone was getting into the first acts of the day, I was chatting with Colin Newton (drummer for Idlewild) in their backstage dressing room.

With Idlewild being one of my all time favourite bands, I was chuffed to bits to just be able to see them, never mind interviewing Colin. So after going over everything in my head a hundred times to make sure I didn’t make any mistakes, I managed to get out a few questions:

Me: So what are you most looking forward to at V this year?
Colin: Not very much really, Franz Ferdinand I guess. I’d say this year’s line-up is pretty poor compared to previous years. But hey, it’ll be an excuse to make a lot of noise and at least it’s sunny!
Me: Yeah better than yesterday.
Colin: There’s nothing worse than putting your tent up in the rain, and if it was raining then I would be really depressed because I wouldn’t want to be sitting watching any bands, well Franz Ferdinand (laughs)
Me: They’ve done really well to get the position on the V Stage this year.
Colin: Yeah they’re a good band and the two new singles that I’ve heard are really good so I’m sure they’ll be great.

Idlewild

Me: Talking of singles, how’s ‘El Capitan’ doing so far?
Colin: I’m not really sure, probably not very well, see that tends to be the case these days. (laughs)
Me: No I’m sure it’s doing great, it’s one of my favourite singles on the album anyway
Colin: Why thank you

Me: Do you like playing V? Because you’ve played before haven’t you?
Colin: Yeah we’ve played it before, we played V a few years ago in 2003 I think….or maybe 2002 (thinks), and it was really good because Foo Fighters headlined that year and there were loads of good bands on…but we were rubbish!
Me: Oh really? How come?
Colin: I just remember it was one of the worst gigs, we were on quite early again and we’d all been up really late the night before and Bob, our old bass player, I remember he was, I mean everyone could have woken up drunk but he woke up really drunk and it was terrible, we were really really awful. So it doesn’t really hold that many great memories at the moment.

Idlewild

Me: Have you played any other festivals this year?
Colin: Yeah we’ve done a few ones abroad and we’ve done a few weird ones like the Skye Festival and stuff like that.
Me: Cool, did they go alright?
Colin: Yeah they were really good fun! Kind of small you know, we’ve done more small ones than big festivals this year but yeah it’s been nice.

Me: Have there been any bands that you get on well with or would like to meet at any of these festivals?
Colin: There’s no-one that I’d really want to say hello to that I don’t know already, we’ve got lots of friends in different bands and it’s nice when we all play the same festival and stuff.

Me: If you could perform with any band, or open up for them, who would it be?
Colin: I guess we’ve played with loads of good bands, like recently we played with R.E.M in the summer and that was fun. Anyone other than Rooster and Tony Christie really.
Both: (laughs)

Idlewild

As almost everybody has one completely random question that they always like to ask, I decided that I wanted one too, so I borrowed one from a friend as he also wanted to know the answer...

Me: Pirates or Ninjas?
Colin: (whilst laughing) Probably pirates, but I like ninjas when they’re all wrapped in black. I think that’s a good look but I’ll choose pirates because I like the patches and the stripes.

Ending it on that note, I left the guys to get ready for their set and headed back to decide what to do next!
