Scarlett was hurt when Jimmy and Ewan implied that her job at the pub wasn't really that important. Her sense of inadequacy was further fuelled when she struggled to read to Madonna, and Shirley and Lydia inadvertently poked fun at her knowledge of literature.
However, a slightly inebriated University lecturer, Michael Learmonth, took a shine to Scarlett and the two talked about poetry with ease. He gave Scarlett a book and she became intrigued by the poetry so asked Michael to help her understand more about it. A pleased Michael agreed to teach her for free though astutely sussed that this is about more than reading poetry.
Jimmy grew concerned and when Scarlett told him she wants to better herself, he felt he wasn't good enough. Scarlett interpreted Jimmy's bad reaction to Michael as jealousy but Gina set her straight. Even so, when Jimmy walked in on them studying together he overreacted. A massive row ensued where Jimmy demanded Scarlett stop seeing Michael and Scarlett refused.
Michael confronted Jimmy and made him see that Scarlett's desire to learn is for a good cause – to be a good role model for Madonna and give her the opportunities in life which Scarlett never had. Jimmy felt terrible for having reacted so badly, he apologised to Scarlett and promised to support her, he's started already by buying them tickets to a play. Scarlett was over the moon.
Lydia told Lenny if they're starting afresh she wants to know everything about his business, everything, while Ewan tried in vain to talk his father out of going straight. Though Lenny promised to be honest with Lydia he worried about how she'd react when she realised the extent of his past criminal activities. As a result, Lenny lied about his trip to the accountant.
Lydia was furious when she discovered his lie but surprised Lenny by remaining calm when looking through all the business files. She admitted that she doesn't like the contents of some of the files but knows that things will change from now on. Lydia assured Lenny that as long as he is going straight she will stand by him.
Meanwhile, Amber decided she wants to know more about small businesses and asked Shirley if she can spend time in Moda Vida learning from her. Shirley was concerned about her dwindling finances but didn't let on to Amber. When Amber suggested some special offers and promotions to improve business, Shirley was happy to agree.
Shirley confided in Lydia that she's worried about the business, unaware that a nearby stranger was very interested in their conversation. Gordon Swann started sniffing around Shirley and Moda Vida. Shirley started to believe she was being headhunted but her pride took a big dent when Gordon confessed he wanted to buy her out. As far as Shirley was concerned, Moda Vida is not for sale.
Marianne's hopes were briefly raised when Malcolm told her he saw Daniel, but they were dashed again when he said it was a couple of days ago – he hasn't been home since. Malcolm tried to talk Daniel into speaking to Marianne but to no avail.
