The Burton Custom board is really solid. It was one of the first boards that came out that you could take anywhere on the mountain - its the original all-mountain board. It still retains its classic shape, its reasonably soft and therefore accessible to beginners, but advanced riders like it too.
Its versatility comes from its all-round flex and all-round shape. It also comes in loads of sizes, so the longer ones are better for going off-piste because the extra surface area means more float in deep powder and then the really small (149-159) boards are short enough for women or freestylers to use.
Burton's warranty is also excellent and that seems to be the clincher for a lot of people.
