Episode 34. Love, Loyalty and Balmoral

19th century oil painting of Queen Victoria by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (C) scran.ac.uk John Purser uncovers Queen Victoria’s enthusiasm for Scottish music, both classical and traditional, in her patronage of fiddler and composer James Scott Skinner, Alexander Campbell Mackenzie’s sensual oratorio ‘The Rose of Sharon’, Hamish MacCunn’s opera ‘Diarmid’, which received a command performance at Balmoral. The programme features a world premiere recording of part of Act 1.
