Episode 25. Jacobite Manoeuvres
Sunday, 1st July 2007, 5.05pm, Radio Scotland
The battles between the Hanoverians and the Jacobites inspired many songs still sung today, and not all of them are about Bonnie Prince Charlie and his dad. There’s a song and a fiddle tune about George I’s mistress – the English called her ‘The Elephant’, the Scots called her ‘The Sow’. There’s the song about Johnnie Cope sleeping in at the Battle of Prestonpans, which turns out to mean something far ruder if you get the words wrong, as some do. And there are the heart-rending laments for the men lost in battle for the Jacobite cause. John Purser introduces us to all of these.
