telephone lines

We thought we would be organised and get the phone line early as I need the internet to work and its as well we did , it only took about 8 months and several trips to the island to get it installed! It was an interesting experience to say the least. We thought it would be easy, Oh how naieve of us! Of course the idea of simply attaching the line to the pole that just happens to be in out back garden would be out of the question! On the first trip they cancelled the appointment and forgot to tell us!! On the second trip we had been told the outside work had been done and they just needed access to fit the line in the house. When we arrived we found no such work had been done the engineer told us the pole was unstable and they need to put up new one, which could take some time to organise, but before he disappeared again we did manage to convince him that it made sense to fit the internal cables through to the outside,so in theory they could come back any time and attach them to the new pole when we were not there.! So we returned home hopeful of a new Pole and Line soon, But NO!, B.T couldnt make up their mind if the new pole should be at the back or the front of the house! So we left it with them, A few months later, B.T have phoned to say we have a telephone line and could we please test it to see if it works ?, We explained as politely as possible that we had already made two 700 miles journeys at their whim and now they would just have to wait until we moved in! So to date we only have B.T's word for it and no idea if the pole is in the Back garden ,Front Garden or even there at all! The next hurdle is getting a Broadband connection......... .All This of course,is 'island time' and i am resigned to it, Although if Mr B goes on island time I may never get my house finished....

There is the Spanish word 'manana'. There is no Gaelic word for this degree of urgency.

You should think yourself lucky, you know ... I had to have a new phone line installed for my Visitor Centre across the road, because the credit card machine wouldn;t work on the current broadband line ... So full cost of new line, and I was told current poles were overloaded, so cable would have to go underground ... Fair enough, I thought ... Until the engineers left the site, telling me that they had finished, and I would have to now bury the phone line myself, before they would turn it on ...!! They had just left it snaking along the croft fencing a good 400 yds down the road to the junction box ... I buried it as well as I could with a spade, being very careful around entrances to the adjoining croft, which is always wet, soft and muddy, took me two days effort ... still there are touches of gray wire which are unearthed when a dog digs, or when bad weather hits verges ... I just hope nobody ever goes digging along there, cos one good heave through the earth, and my Comms go down ...!!

Manana: gaelic, is it, Calum.? I thought it was colloquial New Mexican (and equally so, old Mexican). Out here in Albuquerque, we live in the future (manana), and of course the future is by definition not here or now. Please pass the salsa. # Don't you have someone in Lewis (or thereabouts) you could trust with a key? A friend, the local constable (call the local police branch, ask them gently whether they would check if you were to send them the key: promise them Krispy Kreme donuts from Berneray), the real estate agent you possibly used etc. # Isn't there cell phone service in Lewis, or does BT telephone and broadband come combo? # Nice view. Where is the nearest phone box across the water that I spy?

had the same problem when we moved to our new house eight months without a phone and we're only 300 metres from the old house, all they had to do was to put the line from the pole on the outskirts ofvgarden and put it in the house and we kept the same phone number!! and as for broadband-i've only had it since october-i must'nt complain their are only four of us in the village who have broadband!!

Let's keep it simple, folks. For example, if What's the Point is Mrs. Fredblog, let her be referred to as such, or by her blog name, and not as Mrs. B. [remember, Mr. B. is Barebraes's hunk/hulk/whatever]. And so on down the line. Thank you all very much for your cooperation ... Rules and regulations, as per the Beeb and adhoc.

What with all the condemned telephone poles, you'll soon be able to mount a polevaulting competition

I cannot believe that mjc from NM has the cheek to go on about rules and regulations, when has that ever bothered him in the past? Well I will tell you shall I ? No, ok please yourself then, I don't care...
