The Eruption - Base Flow
The base flow of a pyroclastic flow is like an avalanche of hot rocks tumbled down from the dome. The rocks vary in size from small stones to huge boulders. The deposits can be more than 200 metres thick. On the 25 June 1997, three separate pyroclastic flows travelled northwards from the volcano. The furthest travelled a distance of up to 6.8 km from the dome.
