Floods prediction
How are SEPA involved in predicting floods in Scotland?
SepaThe Scottish Environment Protection Agency or SEPA are responsible for the protection of the environment in Scotland. Their job is to protect the land, air and water. They work in partnership with a number of organisations to provide an integrated environmental protection system for Scotland.
SEPA ensure that the people of Scotland can receive information about potential flooding and advice on how to reduce the impact of floods by:
- Collating data on river levels and rainfall around the country.
- Click here to see the data they collected around Inverness.
- Interpreting weather forecast information from the Meteorological Office.
- Monitoring tidal and storm surge predictions.
- Take account of local reports.

SEPA operate a Floodline, the number is 0845 988 1188. The Floodline gives people all over Scotland information on the possible risk of flooding.
- Click here to see an example of a flood line recording.

SEPA has a website that gives advance notice of possible flooding. This is known as Flood Watch.
- Click here to see the codes.
