When we're thinking about setting, we shouldn't overlook the society and culture in which the book is set. This society has its own rules and expectations, and these have an impact on the story and the way it's told. Do you think this story could take place in any other society?
The other characters in the book all play an important part in establishing the social and cultural setting. They each have their own fixed place in the community - both physically in the village, and socially in the hierarchy of the community. When you're examining these characters, don't think about their characterisation - think about their function. What role do they play within the village and within the story? | |
