Exam-style Questions

The following questions are similar in style to those you can expect to find in the exam. To really prepare for the exam, try writing your answers under exam conditions; find a quiet place and write without the book or your notes beside you. Allow yourself the same time as you'd get on the day.

  1. Another time, another place.
Choose a novel which has a setting that is unfamiliar: perhaps the action takes place in an unfamiliar location and/or in either the past or the future. Show how the setting (in time and/or place) contributed to the impact of the novel.

  2. Often the characters which prove most interesting are those with some flaw or weakness. With close reference to at least one such character, show how the writer has been able to make use of the weakness(es) to create and maintain interest.
