Welcome to BBC Scotland Education's Around Scotland website looking at Scotland during the time of the Second World War. The site complements the Around Scotland television series Scotland during the Second World War but can also be used as a stand alone resource. It is aimed at 10-12 year olds. This site aims to provide an interesting arena for investigation, evidence gathering and assessment for pupils whilst encouraging them to role-play as enemy spies.
Links with Revised E.S. 5-14 Guidelines This site is mainly at level D of the new Environmental Studies document although some of the mission activities are level C and E, due to the differentiation. Classroom Use Pupils must first select an area to work in: - Home Life (which includes inside and outside the home)
- School
- Evacuation
- Street Life
Following investigation of each area pupils are encouraged to complete tasks relating to what they have found out. These are called "missions" which range in their levels of difficulty. Pupils have to complete mission one first, then two and then three.
Each area begins with an illustration of a war time scene from 1941. As the pupil rolls over the image, various items become active.
However, before they start to investigate an area we would urge teachers to ensure that pupils have printed out their Spy Notebook for as they will need this to make notes before they can complete their Spy Log missions online. If no print facility is available notes can be written on plain paper.
The pupil must then click the active item in the picture to find out more. After taking notes for the three missions they move onto the Spy Log and complete the tasks there. If pupils run into difficulty a Hints facility is provided. They can also check the Word Bank which is a glossary of key terms. A suggested order to work through each area would be:- - After selecting an area to work in, print the notebook.
- Investigate the picture taking written notes on the notebook, progressing through missions 1, 2 and 3.
- Complete the Spy Log using notes from the notebook as reference.
This Spy Log can be saved after mission 3 is completed. If a pupil has only managed to complete mission 1 he/she is given a password which they can use to rejoin the Spy Log at the mission 2 stage the next time they use the site.
The passwords are:-
| Home Life | School | Evacuation | Street | mission 1 | siren | medal | evacuation | gun | mission 2 | victory | soldier | U-boat | rations | mission 3 | Germany | commando | Churchill | Hitler | Please note: passwords are case sensitive |
