The Walls Have Eyes Installation

An investigation into how current tools can be used to track you in physical space using the devices you are carrying and using

Published: 1 January 2014

The Walls have Eyes is an experimental installation developed by BBC R&D for Ian Forrester and Jasmine Cox's Ethical Dilemma Cafe at Mozilla festival 2014 (Mozfest), and is a collaboration between Libby Miller, Jasmine and Andrew Nicolaou.

What we are doing

The installation consists of pictures frames containing Raspberry Pis, cameras and wifi USB cards. When triggered by an ultrasonic distance sensor, the cameras take pictures, and do face detection, while the wifi cards search for local devices. The result is displayed on a tablet and printed on a dot matrix printer.

The Walls Have Eyes is designed to make visible some of the data we unconsciously disclose whenever we move round physical space. It's become more common to realise quite how much evidence of our online activity we leave on servers around the Web: this experimental installation is designed to highlight that similar data collection techniques are starting to be used in the real world as well.

It was shortlisted for Designs of the Year 2015 in the "Digital" category where it is on display from March 23rd to August 25th 2015.
