EuroMeme is a prototype showing how Eurovision Song Contest fans can quickly grab a clip from the live Eurovision TV programme using another device such as their phone or a tablet, and send it to their social networks. The video on this page shows the EuroMeme being used, along with some of the features in more detail. It is part of the MediaScape project - an EU-funded project about developer-friendly, HTML-centric standards for connected devices, and was built to demonstrate the Mediascape discovery and synchronisation libraries.

The objective of the work was to build a suitable prototype to show the benefits of the technologies developed within the project for connecting TVs and mobile devices.

We used a user-centred design process to identify and refine the use-cases and developed three concepts. End-users were involved in each stage of development, from early sketches and ideas to using a prototype in a domestic group lab setting.

Once EuroMeme was selected as the idea that best fit the brief, it went through a series of design iterations. We built prototypes that used Mediascape libraries, tested the technical work, and were robust enough to be handed to participants during user sessions in the lab.

The current prototype includes the following features:

  • Overall concept: Quickly and easily capture and share a clip on a connected devices in an easy and intuitive way
  • Home screen: Show a quick sample of existing clips, focus on viewing not making
  • Preview screen: Be able to add a quick message and share
  • Edit screen: Be able to quickly select a 6 second chunk - we weren't designing an edit suite

We hope you can see from the video that it's a lot of fun to use. We'll publish the user centred techniques we used for developing the ideas soon, together with the results of our user evaluation.
