As part of our work on discovery and authentication for MediaScape, a collaborative project looking at the future of cross-device media, we’ve been investigating user experience patterns around finding controllable devices, connecting with them, and sending them commands. In each case, we assume the device is already connected to the network. Here we present some videos showing a variety of current and experimental methods, and describe some conclusions from our research in this area.

We compiled a list of all the products we could think of that involved finding devices on the network and somehow pushing media to them or controlling them. Andrew and Lianne then trawled the internet to find videos of them in action. This involved watching many, many unboxing videos.

We also went to the BBC's Blue Room consumer technology lab where we got hands on experience with these devices. The result is two videos showing items that are currently shipping and also some more novel prototypes from UX academic research and beyond.
