She's been described as "the woman who made Hollywood". Mary Pickford was America 's first movie star and the most famous woman of the early twentieth century. She starred in some two hundred films and at her height was one of the highest paid people in the movie industry.
But she retired from acting when "talkies" came in, became a recluse and her reputation waned. As the National Film Theatre screens a season of her films, is it time to reappraise Mary Pickford's legacy?
