Kali is an Indian warrior goddess who protects her subjects. It's also the name chosen by a theatre company set up to encourage new drama by Asian women.
It seems the Kali Theatre Company is having some success. Following a nationwide tour, two new plays by British Pakistani writers are now in rep at the Southwark Playhouse in London: Bells by Yasmin Whittaker Khan and Chaos, a comedy set shortly after 9/11 by first-time writer Azma Dar.
Janet Steel is artistic director of the Kali theatre company. She was also the director of Bhezti (Punjabi for dishonour) by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti the play that caused furore in Birmingham last year, in which Shelley King played Balbir, the mother.
Chaos and Bells are at the Southwark Playhouse, London until the 14 of May
