on her first Shakespearian role as Gertrude in Hamlet

Jane Birkin once turned up for a French film screen test in front of Serge Gainsbourg barely able to speak a word of French. Never one to shirk a creative challenge, at 58 she’s taken on her first Shakespearean role as Gertrude in Hamlet.

Jane Birkin joins Jenni to talk about her decision to return to the stage and about the strong theatrical roots she’s inherited from her late mother, the actress, Judy Campbell.

Hamlet is at the Royal & Derngate Theatre, Northampton until 3 April
