Anton and the women12 July 2004
Chekhov's complex relationship with the opposite sex

Chekhov spent a lifetime writing letters to the women in his life - his sister, his mother; and a whole host of women who harboured hopes of marrying him. He was fond of them all, yet kept them all at a distance, fearing distraction from his writing.

Biographer Rosamund Bartlett and actor Michael Pennington explore Chekhov's relationships with women as a man, and as a writer.

Chekhov by Rosamund Bartlett, Scenes from a Life is published by Free Press. Michael Pennington - Are You There Crocodile? Inventing Anton Chekhov is published by Oberon Books. Anton Chekhov - A Life In Letters is published by Penguin and About Love and Other Stories is published by OUP
