Chekhov's complex relationship with the opposite sex
Chekhov spent a lifetime writing letters to the women in his life - his sister, his mother; and a whole host of women who harboured hopes of marrying him. He was fond of them all, yet kept them all at a distance, fearing distraction from his writing.
