The Open University was the world's first successful distance teaching university, set up by Jennie Lee, a Minister in the Department of Education and Science under Harold Wilson. It has just celebrated its 40th year, and in that time many people have benefitted from the opportunity to study remotely, women in particular. Jenni takes a look back at how the OU began and the impact it has had on women's lives with its former Vice Chancellor Professor Brenda Gourley, and current Head of Sociology Professor Kath Woodward.
