Kenneth MacMillan’s widow talks about being the guardian of her husband’s work
For the first time in its 58 year history, the English National Ballet is performing Manon. It is one of choreographer Kenneth MacMillan’s greatest masterpieces and tells the story of a woman trapped between two lovers; one young and poor, the other old and rich. In the seedy back streets of 18th century Paris she becomes entangled in a web of passion, greed, murder and money before dying tragically in the arms of the one man who truly loved her. Kenneth's widow, Deborah MacMillan, now owns her husband’s repertoire and watches over companies performing the ballets he created. She joins Jane to discuss her husband’s legacy and the current state of ballet in Britain.
The English Nation Ballet production of ‘Manon’ is at the Palace Theatre in Manchester until the 16th November. It opens at the London Coliseum from the 2nd to the 11th January 2009.
