The Tillingbourne valley is fed by springs on the northern side of Leith Hill in Surrey. It runs west for little more than 10 miles until it reaches the River Wey. And for most of its length you could jump across it - with a bit of a run up! Although today it is archetypal peaceful, leafy Surrey scenery this was certainly not always the case.
The challenge:
Find two fiery bangs, now silenced, and a silent fire still growing in this landscape.
We are looking for more places for the Land Lines team to visit. If your own local area is rich in history that has left its mark on the landscape around you, please get in touch and tell us about it. E-mail: [email protected]
