Quentin Cooper explores the importance of groundwater in our lives. Most of our freshwater resources are stored naturally as groundwater and one-third of the public water supply is taken from this source and in the drier, south east region, many communities are totally dependant upon it.

Although totally hidden from view, groundwater plays a central role in our environment, maintaining wetlands and river flows through prolonged dry periods. However, to many people who rely upon it, groundwater remains a subject of mystery - even folklore.

How does groundwater occur and where can it be found? How is it used and how do we care for it? Is the way that man behaves on the land posing a huge risk to its natural pristine quality and how can science and technology help in the way we way we treat it, use it and preserve it?
