It's Official

Since Phil Striplin from Birmingham challenged Home Truthers to find one, just one, completely empty square kilometre on an Ordnance Survey map, we've been deluged with grid references from up and down the country. At last we can put the quest for The Dullest Place in Britain to rest with the judgement of no less than the Ordnance Survey people themselves - so no arguing.

This is what they have to say...

"There are no blank squares on any of our (current) 204 Landranger maps. We have, however, found two more squares which supplement the ones on your website which are very nearly empty (Landranger 12 - square 2944 and Landranger 130 - square 8641) but our cartographers believe that the person nominating the square with the tiny nick of electricity line has probably found the emptiest.

Winner - The Dullest Place in Britain!
However, if you look at the same 1 kilometre squares on more detailed OS maps you find that even the emptiest squares have detail that is not otherwise possible to show. So, for example, the winning square with the electricity cable is also criss-crossed on our more detailed mapping with drainage ditches and dykes so the chances of a finding a totally boring place with nothing worth noting in it are zilch!"

So, hearty congratulations David Machin from Staffordshire, your nomination of Landranger map 112, Scunthorpe and Surrounding Area, grid reference 8323 takes the cartological biscuit along with the coveted title of The Dullest Place in Britain!
