Britain's Dullest Place? Last week Phil Striplin from Birmingham threw down the gauntlet and challenged Home Truthers to find one square kilometre on an Ordnance Survey map which had nothing in it at all - not even a contour line - just white and empty and, presumably, extremely dull. Some suggestions were in downright breach of the regulations, but these offerings with varying degress of whitness, stumbled into the top six.1. Darren Monckton via the Home Truths Message boards offered OS Landranger map 85, around the Solway Firth area, grid ref NY050690, which he says is "pretty dull". An understatement. So far, we reckon this square is the The Dullest Place in Britain. Well done, Darren. 2. David Machin e-mailed to suggest Scunthorpe and Surrounding Area, OS Landranger map 112 with the recommendation that "a close look at grid square 8323 is a must." Highly commended. 3. Paul Mason sent in numerous references. OS Landranger map 113, grid ref 3018 near Patrington in Lincolnshire made interesting if not entirely convincing viewing. That's quite a big drainage ditch, Paul. 4. Another reference from the prolific Paul Mason. This time we landed on a little-known square near The Wash from the better-known OS Landranger map 131. Make your way to grid reference 4725. Not bad, but not white, either. 5. Rachel Jones bravely entered the fray with Dolgellau and Surrounding Area, OS Landranger map 124, and a snappy little grid reference of 5634. Nice work Rachel, but what are the yellowy bits? 6. And finally, Jack Kirby kindly pointed out a square which had been suggested by a fellow member of The Charles Close Society for the Study of Ordnance Survey Maps. This one resides quietly on OS Landranger Map 81, near Alnwick, Morpeth at grid reference NZ2698. Quite frankly Jack, it doesn't pass muster, even if an earlier edition of the map did show it with more white it than it has here. It's just too interesting to be given really serious consideration.
