Parents and child

Caring for kids

Listen to the item

Frank and Iris Burgoyne, who have four children of their own, have fostered more that 200 children over the past 40 years.

17 of these children were long-term - spending more than a year living with the family. Three of them they adopted.

It was back in 1954 that the Burgoynes fostered their first child. He was a young boy who'd lost his dad in the war and his mother, keen for her son to have some fatherly guidance, asked Frank and Iris to look after him at weekends.

Frank's work then took him away from Britain, to Egypt and South Africa and it was here that he and Iris had their four children. But when they came back to the UK in 1965 and moved to Llangollen, they began to foster in earnest - though this wasn't their original intention.
