Margie rides pillion on Dyuen's bike in Vietnam

Vietnam story: pt 1

Listen to the item

Some years ago, Margie, who was then 73-years-old, accompanied her husband, Hank, on one of his photographic expeditions.

This time it was to Hanoi to record the celebrations that mark Vietnam's most important holiday, the Tet Festival, which falls around the end of January and the beginning of February and marks the Lunar New Year.

While Hank was snapping, Margie took in the sights, and that's how she met Dyuen. Dyuen was then 23. It was, as the say in the movie trailers, a chance encounter that would change everybody's life.

Kim Normanton talked to Margie and Dyuen at Margie's home in St. Louis, Missouri.
