Richard Uridge goes on a search for the elusive Pine Marten in the forests around Lake Vyrnwy.
As he travels he learns of the forest's connection with the historical Welsh fighter for Independence, Owain Glyndwr, who used the forests of mid-Wales to hide his guerrilla army. Richard travels the forest in the traditional way of horseback (or carriage in his case) and discovers that the Vyrnwy forest lays claim to the tallest tree in Wales - a Douglas Pine which stretches 62m high. The Douglas Pines play host to a variety of woodland creatures, including the flamboyant cross bill - which Richard discovers is almost as elusive as the pine marten.
