Adding you family's letters and diaries to Memoryshare

So that your entries to Memoryshare are as accessible as possible to other site users, there are a few tips that would be useful to follow. You will need to register on Memoryshare but this is free, and quick and easy to do.

Tips on sequencing and linking your contributions

Enter letters and diary extracts into Memoryshare so they relate to the date on which they were written - you can do this by clicking on the Add Memory tab and then selecting the date.

If you are adding a memory to Memoryshare, make sure you add some text at the beginning of your story, as this is not a personal memory of your own. This text could be something like, ‘This is an extract from a letter sent by my grandfather, Alfred Brown, to my grandmother, Mary Brown, on 15 June 1945. It describes the D-Day landings, and have been added to Memoryshare by me, Janet Brown, on his behalf.’

If you are adding more than one entry, add links to the different entries to create a sequence that people on the site can follow. To add links to entries you have already written, use the Edit Memory link under your extract. (You'll need to be signed in to see this). See an example of this here.

Personal security

You should not include anyone else's personal details in your contributions if there is a risk that they are relevant today. Full postal addresses as written at the top of letters should be shortened to remove the house name or number and street name. eg Balham, London

Consider whether the content contains details which can be used as online security questions e.g. date of birth (or birthday), mother's maiden name, place of birth, first school. If so, you may want to remove some of the detail, for example the exact date in a month or a surname. You should also think about these points when completing the About You section on the Your Memories page

Consider using a user name nick name when entering your posts so your name isn’t displayed. You can alter your nickname from Memoryshare’s Your Preferences tab when you are signed in.

Rights and consent

Only post content to Memoryshare which is your own original work and does not violate, plagiarise, or infringe the rights of any third party. If your post includes material owned by a third party you will need to obtain their permission before submission.

Where appropriate we also recommend that you seek permission to share the stories of the people your contributions are based on. Find out more about copyright and about using and clearing third party material here.
