Dylan Thomas at the BBC

5.1 Surround sound - the sound coming at you from five directions placed around the room - has been the norm in cinema sound systems for some years. With the rapid growth in the uptake of home cinema systems (already estimated to be in 10% of UK homes), surround sound is now available in your front room.

Until recently, the technology was not available to broadcast radio programmes in this format. However, broadcasting organisations in Europe, particularly Swedish Radio, have been experimenting with providing 5.1 mixes of programmes on the net: listeners are invited to download the files, copy them to a cd and play them out through a dvd player wired into a home cinema system.

This unique production of Under Milk Wood in 5.1 Surround Sound can be accessed here but is only available if your computer is equipped to play computer games - where 5.1 surround sound is standard. You will also require Windows Media Player 9 or above or RealPlayer 10 and have a broadband connection within the UK.

Audio Book
Under Milk Wood is available from BBC Audiobooks in the CD collection A Season of Dylan Thomas.
