MONDAY NIGHT

* For 40 years until 1999, only a fraction of the estimated half-million items of art, furniture, jewels and porcelain from the Queen's art collection were on display in a converted chapel at Buckingham Palace. To see the rest you needed an invitation from the Queen. But this week a specially-built art gallery opens to the public and features an opening exhibition of 450 items from the collection, the pieces on show range from a 15th century prayer-book, to masterpieces by Leonardo, Rembrandt and Monet and a painting of the present Queen by Lucien Freud.

Royal Treasures: A Golden Jubilee Celebration is at the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace from Wednesday until 12 January 2003.

* One of the hottest movies to come to Cannes this year is 20 minutes long, still unfinished, and cost $100m so far. But then it is the latest Martin Scorsese gangster film. Jason Solomons, who writes about film for The Mail On Sunday and The Observer, explains in his first report for Front Row from Cannes 2002.

* Almost all screenwriters now use computer software, architects are now more likely to use a keyboard than a drawing board, musicians are as likely to sit at a computer as a piano. Front Row looks at how computer technology is changing the making of art.

Musician Anthony Powers' latest work Changing The Story is premiered at the Spitalfields Festival in London next month.

* Founded in America in 1973, The Kronos Quartet have become one of the most respected string outfits around. However, while many such foursomes mainly explore the existing classical repertoire, Kronos have consistently commissioned new work. This is unusual enough, but even more radical is their constant search for new sources and inspirations for music. For example, their new album Nuevo includes classical pieces played with a folded-up leaf and incorporates theme tunes from hit Mexican television programmes. Front Row asked them why.
