* For 40 years until 1999, only a fraction of the estimated half-million items of art, furniture, jewels and porcelain from the Queen's art collection were on display in a converted chapel at Buckingham Palace. To see the rest you needed an invitation from the Queen. But this week a specially-built art gallery opens to the public and features an opening exhibition of 450 items from the collection, the pieces on show range from a 15th century prayer-book, to masterpieces by Leonardo, Rembrandt and Monet and a painting of the present Queen by Lucien Freud.
Royal Treasures: A Golden Jubilee Celebration is at the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace from Wednesday until 12 January 2003.

* Founded in America in 1973, The Kronos Quartet have become one of the most respected string outfits around. However, while many such foursomes mainly explore the existing classical repertoire, Kronos have consistently commissioned new work. This is unusual enough, but even more radical is their constant search for new sources and inspirations for music. For example, their new album Nuevo includes classical pieces played with a folded-up leaf and incorporates theme tunes from hit Mexican television programmes. Front Row asked them why.
