The Analects by Confucius - A Brief Introduction

The Analects, or the Lun Yü, is thought to be the most reliable source of the thoughts and philosophy of Confucius.

Not much is known for certain about his life, as so much of it has passed into legend. It is agreed that he lived 551 BCE–479 BCE in the state of Lu (modern Shantung).

He taught the ancient rites and customs to respectable young men but he also had political aspirations. Thwarted in these ambitions, he left Lu and travelled around the neighbouring states for many years, in the hope of converting feudal leaders to a way of government that respected the ancient traditions.

He failed, however, and eventually returned to Lu, where he refined his philosophy with a group of devoted followers. The conversations with his disciples were collected after his death in the Lun Yü, known in the West as the Analects.

This text was adopted as the orthodox philosophy during the Han dynasty and became the foundation for China’s education and administration until the 20th century.
