There are two strands of activity, one led by composer Duncan Chapman, London Sinfonietta musicians and four local trainee musicians working with a group of young people from The Brunts School in Mansfield, the other led by composer Andrew Williams, musicians from Sinfonia ViVA and two local trainee musicians working with young people from Shirebrook School, Bolsover. Through periodic workshops each team will produce recorded material that will be presented in sound installations at Southwell Minster, coinciding with the orchestral performance and a visual art exhibition. The project runs from May - November 2004. Funded by Youth Music, Eastern Orchestral Board, Junction Arts, Nottinghamshire Leisure Services and Nottinghamshire Youth Arts. Following this year's sound installation, Sinfonia ViVA will continue its relationship with young people in Bolsover and with Junction Arts, the arts and regeneration organisation. Further workshops will be held in the summer of 2005, prior to a ViVA orchestral concert featuring From Egil's Saga at Bolsover Castle . Bryars Study Day In October Gavin Bryars will lead a Study Day for music students at the University of Nottingham 's Lakeside Arts Centre. This will include an invitation lecture, a masterclass workshop in which Gavin will comment on short pieces specially composed for a trio of London Sinfonietta musicians by several student composers, and a coaching session with the University Philharmonia. On a separate occasion the Estonian conductor Olari Elts will coach the University's chamber choir, Viva Voce, prior to their performance of From Egil's Saga with the London Sinfonietta at Southwell Minster on 12 November. Funded by Lakeside Arts Centre / University of Nottingham . Thurrock By Chance Beginning in July and continuing in the autumn term, students from two Thurrock schools, Gable Hall School and Gateway Community College, will be collaborating on 'By Chance' - a music, dance and film project using the Cage/Cunningham collaborative model and inspired by the Egil poem and related themes, resulting in a new performance piece which will form part of the concert with the London Sinfonietta at Tilbury Cruise Terminal Baggage Hall on 24 November. The artists leading the project will be composer Fraser Trainer, choreographer Susanne Thomas and film maker Claudia Lee. Approximately 70 Year 9/10 students will be involved. Funded by Thurrock Borough Council, Eastern Orchestral Board, Arts Council England Grants for the Arts, Albert & Florence Smith Memorial Trust. Percussion Project Another part of the Tilbury performance will be a new piece featuring the Thurrock Music Services Percussion Ensemble. These young musicians will work with composer Fraser Trainer, sound designer Ian Dearden and two London Sinfonietta musicians to devise their new work using music by Gavin Bryars as a starting point. Funded by Thurrock Music Service, ACE Grants for the Arts. Norwich Film, Music and Words Project In the autumn term a creative writing, music and film project will involve GCSE and A' Level students at Notre Dame High School and an out-of-school group from NR5, an arts and media organisation working with excluded young people from parts of inner city Norwich. The participants will take the mythological basis of Bryars' work as inspiration for their creative work, resulting in short recorded audio-visual 'statements' for projection during the London Sinfonietta concert at Norwich Cathedral on 23 November. The project will be led by music animateur Sigrun Saevarsdottir-Griffiths, film maker Kathy Hinde Hinde and a writer to be confirmed. Funded by Norwich Town Close Estate Charity, Lynn Charity, RVW Trust, Eastern Orchestral Board, Norwich Theatre Royal, Norwich City Council, Norfolk County Council. Cambridgeshire Subject to funding, two out-of-school creative projects will be launched in the autumn. These will involve young people in two parts of the county working with composers, London Sinfonietta musicians and local community musicians to create new work for presentation at Cambridge Corn Exchange, tying in with the orchestral concert on 11 November.
